Journey into the Black Hole

Location:
OGDC Exhibition Hall

Today we will present one of our interesting exhibits that you could find in the Exhibition Hall of OGDC, and as for this week we will portray to you the 'Black Hole' exhibit.

The Black Hole Exhibit is basically an octagonal table with a funnel-like-tunnel in the middle. Other than that, two small sized balls accompany the black hole exhibit.

What you can do is: roll the balls at an angle close to the side of the funnel shaped tunnel.

What you will see is: The balls will start to orbit the funnel before entering it. Once inside the funnel, the balls will spin with an increasing velocity before exiting through the bottom.

The Black Hole exhibit roughly illustrates what will happen as a planetary object comes close to a black hole. It also shows the phenomenon of centrifugal force where the balls are trying to move in a straight line, however, forced to curve by the wall of the funnel. The principal of angular momentum is also demonstrated where a spinning object will rotate faster if it has a smaller radius than when it has a bigger radius.

The two phenomenons shown by the Black Hole exhibit best represents the orbits of planetary objects to each other. For Example, the moon orbiting planet Earth. The force to make the moon to orbit Earth is provided by the gravitational force exerted by Earth itself, instead of the force applied by the wall of the funnel in the Black Hole Exhibit. In addition, the mass of the moon makes the rotation to be slower.
